My Life in the Mirror

About this book

Memories of the Mellah quarter, Marrakech, and the oasis landscape of Skoura shape this autobiography. Childhood encounters with different cultures and discoveries in public libraries lead into later reflections on taking a stand and living with the consequences of words. Set against the years around Moroccan independence and subsequent change, the account links local places with questions of identity. It considers memory not simply as a record of events, but as part of how a person understands a life and its meaning.
